You could have it all — the perfect hair, the trendiest clothes, and the accessories to match — but if your skin falls short, it doesn’t matter much.
Here, Dr. Tanya Lawson, our expert at Inbloom Health + Medispa in Londonderry, New Hampshire, takes a closer look at cellulite and shows you how easy it is to get back to smooth skin.
Why do I have cellulite?
You might think cellulite is all about fat, but it actually has a lot to do with the connective tissues below the surface of your skin. Cellulite forms when the fibrous bands of tissue that connect your skin to the underlying muscles tighten irregularly. As those tissues pull down on your skin, any fat you have pushes upward.
The result? Puckered, lumpy skin on your tummy, buttocks, and thighs.
It’s not exactly known what causes cellulite to form, but there are a few factors that play a role, including gender.
Women are much more likely to get cellulite because of how their connective tissue bands are constructed. In women, the fibers that make up the bands of tissue run in the same direction and are an equal distance apart. In men, the fibers criss-cross each other. Parallel bands like those found in women may contribute to more pronounced puckering.
Some also believe that higher amounts of estrogen and fat distribution play roles in women’s higher susceptibility to cellulite.
How do I get rid of cellulite?
Cellulite isn’t a health threat, but it certainly threatens your aesthetics. Fortunately, there’s a safe, noninvasive way you can get rid of it using the power of sound waves.
You read that right: sound waves.
The Z Wave® cellulite treatment system delivers powerful sound waves through your skin via a handheld applicator. Once they penetrate your skin, the waves spread out radially (much like the ripples a pebble makes when dropped into a still pond). The radial movement of the waves significantly enhances the effects of the treatment.
Your body responds to the sound waves by stimulating blood circulation and improving lymphatic drainage, which effectively reduces the appearance of cellulite.
But we don’t stop there. Z Wave is a great standalone treatment, but it also works well with our other aesthetic services, such as CoolSculpting®. We often recommend combining treatments to get the best results.
What else can I do about cellulite?
There’s no substitute for our advanced treatments, but there are a few things you can do to help reduce the appearance of cellulite and possibly prevent it from returning. Some of the best strategies to fight cellulite are:
- Topical treatments that moisturize and tighten the skin
- Exercise
- Healthy diet
- Detoxifying
- Hydration
- Dry brushing
- Home remedies, such as coffee grounds and apple cider vinegar
