What is IBS?
IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome, is a common intestinal disorder that causes pain in the stomach, gas, constipation, and diarrhea. Most people with irritable bowel syndrome can ease their symptoms with changes to their diet, stress relief, and medicine. For others, the symptoms are more severe. People with IBS often experience symptoms for at least 3 straight months.
What causes IBS?
The cause of irritable bowel syndrome is unknown. Although there is no cure for this disorder, symptoms can easily be treated. Women, people between the ages of 30 and 50, and people with a family member who has IBS are more likely to suffer from this disorder.
What are the symptoms?
Irritable bowel syndrome is defined as discomfort or abdominal pain, along with a change in bowel habits, for 3 months or more. The symptoms vary from person to person and primarily include:
- Constipation (infrequent stools that may be dry and hard)
- Diarrhea (frequent loose stools)
- Alternating between constipation and diarrhea
- Cramps, discomfort, or pain in the abdominal area
- Mucus in the stool
- Bloated or swollen stomach area
Women with IBS may have more symptoms during their menstrual periods.
What is SIBO?
SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, is a medical condition that occurs when there are excess bacteria in the small intestine. The condition often occurs due to a lack of movement of the small intestine.
What are the symptoms?
SIBO is an abnormal number of bacteria in the small intestine that can result in:
