What is platelet-rich plasma?

Plasma is found in the blood and contains red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors, which are commonly used by medical professionals to heal injuries. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is plasma that contains more platelets than what is typically found in your blood. A high concentration of platelets and growth factors can be 5-10 times richer than normal plasma.

To develop and prepare PRP, we will draw a small amount of blood. Using the centrifuge at our clinic, we will separate platelets from other blood cells to increase their concentration. The increased level of platelets is then combined with the remaining blood.

How does PRP for hair loss work?

Platelet-rich plasma is used to stimulate and nourish follicles for hair growth. The growth factors found in PRP have been shown to generate new hair and improve the density and health of your existing hair. When injected into the areas of thinning hair, PRP can stimulate dormant hair follicles. PRP treatments improve hair health, strength, individual hair diameter, and prevent future hair loss. You will also be able to maintain the current number of hairs and improve the health and quality of your existing hairs. This treatment is a natural, effective way to address hair loss and thinning.

What happens during the treatment?

When you come in for your treatment at InBloom Health, your scalp will be given an anesthesia block to ensure that you do not feel any pain or discomfort. Similar to a routine blood test, we will draw a small amount of your blood. We will then prepare the PRP by centrifuging your blood sample. The centrifuge machine has a rapidly rotating container that uses centrifugal force to separate the growth factors.

We will then add the PRP to a syringe and inject it into your scalp. Injections are made to deliver the highly-concentrated platelet-rich plasma into the skin at the level of any weak hair follicles. The entire procedure takes under an hour to complete, but you will be able to drive yourself home afterward and resume your daily routine. There is no downtime. There may be minimal tenderness and swelling in the injection sites for 3-5 days following the treatment.

When will I see results?

You may start to see improvement in texture, thickness, and growth of new hairs in the treated area within 2 weeks after your treatment.* Typically, it takes 3 to 6 months from your initial treatment to see measurable results.*

PRP has been shown to induce new hair regeneration, decelerate hair loss, make finer hairs thicker, increase density and strength of hairs in both women and men.

How many treatments will I need?

We recommend that you start with 4 appointments, spaced 4 weeks apart as an initial treatment. Maintenance treatments every 1-2 years will help you maintain your results.
